Update: At the 26th GST Council meeting, it has been decided to implement he inter-state e-way bill from 1st April, 2018. For intra-state movement, the e-way bill will be rolled out in a phased manner starting from 15th April, 2018, such that all states are covered by 1st June, 2018.

Registering for SMS Mode of E-way Bill

  • 1. Click the option "For SMS" under the "Registration"” "tab, in the main menu of the e-way bill portal.
  • 2.A screen will be displayed, wherein the registered mobile number has to be entered which has been used for registration on the e-way bill portal.
  • 3.Click "Send OTP".
  • 4.On receiving the OTP on the registered mobile number, enter the same in the "Enter OTP" field.
  • 5. Click "Verify OTP" and then click "Exit".
  • 6.On doing so, a screen will be displayed, with the User IDs displayed.
  • 7.Select the User ID from the drop down menu, after which the mobile number registered against the selected User ID will be auto populated by the system.
  • 8.On clicking "Submit", the system will allow the particular user to generate e-way bill through the SMS mode.

Note: One may register a maximum of 2 mobile numbers against a single GSTIN, for the purpose of using the SMS mode. For all types of requests, the SMS will need to be sent to the registered mobile number of the State from which one is operating. For instance, all users in Karnataka will be sending the SMS to 97319 79899. Similarly, each State will have a specified contact number for SMS mode.

Generating e-way bill using SMS mode - For Businesses

In case one is a registered business who wants to generate a new e-way bill using SMS mode, the following SMS request needs to be sent:

EWBG / TranType / RecGSTIN/ DelPinCode / InvNo / InvDate / TotalValue / HSNCode / ApprDist / Vehicle

  • 1.EWBG - E-way bill Generation for Registered Businesses (Fixed value).
  • 2.TranType - Transaction Type (Value will depend on the type of transaction as listed below)
    • a.OSUP – Outward Supply
    • b.OEXP –Outward Export
    • c.OJOB – Outward Job Work
    • d.OSCD – Outward SKD / CKD
    • e.ORNK – Outward Recipient Not Known
    • f.OFOU – Outward For Own Use
    • g.OEOF – Outward Exhibitions & Fairs
    • h.OLNS – Outward Line Sales
    • i.OOTH – Outward Others
    • j.ISUP – Inward Supply
    • k.IIMP – Inward Import
    • l.ISCD – Inward SKD/CKD
    • m.IJWR – Inward Job Work Returns
    • n.ISLR – Inward Sales Returns
    • o.IEOF – Inward Exhibitions & Fairs
    • p.IOTH – Inward Others
  • 3.RecGSTIN - Recipient's GSTIN or URP if he/she is an unregistered person (15 digits or URP).
  • 4. DelPinCode - PIN Code of the place of delivery as per the invoice (6 digits).
  • 5. InvNo – Invoice / Bill number (Maximum of 15 characters which may be alphanumeric with "-" and "/" being the only permitted special characters).
  • 6. InvDate - Invoice / Bill date (In DD/MM/YYYY format).
  • 7. TotalValue - Total Invoice / Bill value (Maximum of 15 digits with 2 decimal places).
  • 8. HSN Code – HSN Code (At least 2 digits).
  • 9. ApprDist – Approximate Distance in KMs (Numeric).
  • 10.Vehicle - Vehicle number which will carry the goods (AB12AB1234 / AB12A1234 / AB121234 / ABC1234 format).

Generating e-way bill using SMS mode – For Transporters

In case one is a transporter who wants to generate a new e-way bill using SMS mode, the following SMS request needs to be sent:

EWBT / TranType / SuppGSTIN / RecGSTIN / DelPinCode / InvNo / InvDate / TotalValue / HSNCode / ApprDist / Vehicle

  • 1.EWBT - E-way bill Generation for Transporters (Fixed value).
  • 2.TranType – Transaction Type (Value will depend on the type of transaction as listed below).
    • a.OSUP – Outward Supply
    • b.OEXP – Outward Export
    • c.OJOB – Outward Job Work
    • d.OSCD – Outward SKD / CKD
    • e.ORNK – Outward Recipient Not Known

  • 7.InvDate - Invoice / Bill date (In DD/MM/YYYY format).
  • 8.TotalValue - Total Invoice / Bill value (Maximum of 15 digits with 2 decimal places).

  • 10.ApprDist – Approximate Distance in KMs (Numeric).

Updating vehicle number using SMS Mode

In case one wants to update the vehicle number of e-way bill, using the SMS mode, one will need to send the following SMS request:

EWBV / EWB_NO / Vehicle / ReasCode

  • 1.EWBV - E-way bill Vehicle Updation (Fixed value).
  • 2.EWB_NO – E-way bill Number (12 digits).
  • 3.Vehicle - Vehicle number which will carry the goods (AB12AB1234 / AB12A1234 / AB121234 / ABC1234 format).
  • 4.ReasCode - Reason for changing the vehicle (Value will depend on the reasons as listed below)
    • a.FST – First Vehicle
    • b.BRK – Break Down
    • c.TRS – Transhipment
    • d.OTH – Others

    Note: A few points which one needs to keep in mind, with regards to updating the e-way bill via SMS Mode are as follows:

    • 1..Vehicle updating is allowed only for the tax payer who has generated or the transporter who has been authorized while generating the e-way bill.
    • 2. Vehicle updating will not be allowed, if the validity period as per the distance mentioned in e-way bill expires.

    Cancelling e-way bill using SMS Mode

    In case one wants to cancel the e-way bill, using the SMS mode, one will need to send the following SMS request:

    EWBC / EWB_NO

    Before we proceed, let us understand, what each of these parameters stand for, along with the values that are permitted for each parameter (specified in brackets):

    • 1.EWBC - E-way bill Cancellation (Fixed value).
    • 2.EWB_NO – E-way bill Number (12 digits).

    Note: A few points which one needs to keep in mind, with regards to cancelling the e-way bill via SMS Mode are as follows:

    • 1.Cancellation is allowed only for the generator of the e-way bill.
    • 2. Cancellation is allowed only within 24 hours of generation of the e-way bill.
    • 3.Verified e-way bill cannot be cancelled.
