    From the 1st of April 2018, the e-way bill became live for all inter-state transactions, and also the phase-wise roll-out for States have also started. Businesses across the nation, have thus become equipped or are becoming ready to align their business with the requirements of e-way bill compliance. However, there is a GST exemption list for an e-way bill which comprises of a list of 153 items exempted from the e-way bill, which need to be referred to by businesses, so that they can avoid unnecessary hassle.

    This list of goods exempted from the e-way bill are specified as per Rule 138 (14) in the respective State / Union Territory GST rules.

    What is E-Way Bill Exemption?

    An e-way bill exemption means certain goods can be transported without generating an e-way bill, regardless of value or distance (subject to conditions).

    This applies mainly to:

    • Perishable goods
    • Agricultural produce
    • Essential commodities
    • Unprocessed natural products

    Important Condition to Remember

    Many goods are exempt only if they are NOT:

    • Branded
    • Packaged in unit containers

    Other Situations Where E-Way Bill is Not Required

    Apart from goods, certain scenarios also do not require an e-way bill:
