For a business that operates for four months of the year, a lifetime software license is not always the right starting point. TallyPrime offers two structurally different pricing paths: a one-time perpetual license you own forever, and a rental plan you pay for only as long as you need it. Which one makes financial sense for seasonal businesses depends on how many months you actually operate, how many people need access and whether you plan to keep the software beyond this season.
What are the two pricing paths?
TallyPrime is available as a perpetual (lifetime) license or as a rental subscription. Both options give you access to all features, including invoicing, GST compliance, inventory management and connected banking. The difference is entirely in how you pay and for how long buy TallyPrime subscription.
Perpetual licence
You pay once and own the software indefinitely. The license does not expire. However, to receive statutory updates (such as GST rate changes, e-invoicing requirements or new return formats), you need to renew Tally Software Services (TSS) separately each year. Without an active TSS, the software continues to work, but it will not pull in compliance updates or connected services.
Rental (subscription) license
You pay for a fixed period, after which the license stops working unless renewed. Rental plans are available for 1, 3 and 12 months. TSS is included during the rental period, so there is no separate renewal charge while the subscription is active.

Which TallyPrime plan makes sense for a seasonal business
The right plan depends on three variables: how many months you operate, whether you have one user or many and whether you intend to use TallyPrime across multiple financial years.
You operate for 1 to 3 months a year
A short rental makes the most sense here. A 1-month Silver rental at ₹750 (plus GST) is appropriate if your peak season is tightly defined, for example, a Diwali gifting business or a monsoon-specific service. A 3-month rental at ₹2,138 (plus GST) works well for a summer-only operation such as a cold beverage manufacturer or a travel business active only during school holidays.
The consideration: if you do this every year, three years of 3-month rentals will cost more than a perpetual license. Run the numbers before committing.
You operate for 4 to 8 months a year
The 12-month Silver rental at ₹8,100 (plus GST) often makes more sense than a shorter plan for this range, because it includes a full TSS period and the per-month cost drops to around ₹675. However, if you expect to use TallyPrime for more than three years, the perpetual license at ₹22,500 (plus ₹4,500 per year for TSS after the first year) will cost less over time.
You have multiple staff who need simultaneous access
If two or more people need to enter data simultaneously, Silver is not sufficient. The Silver license covers a single user on a single computer. For concurrent multi-user access over a local area network, you need TallyPrime Gold. The Gold rental for 12 months is ₹24,300 (plus GST), and the perpetual Gold license is ₹67,500 (plus GST), with TSS renewal at ₹13,500 per year.
A seasonal business with even two staff members entering transactions simultaneously will find that Silver creates a bottleneck during peak days, regardless of cost.
When the perpetual license makes sense
The perpetual license becomes the better financial choice when:
- You have used TallyPrime for 2 or more years and expect to continue using it.
- Your business spans more than 8 months of active accounting work per year.
- You want to keep historical data and access old records in the off-season without paying for an active subscription.
- You plan to upgrade to Gold later, since the perpetual license supports future upgrades.
What you lose without an active TSS
This is a detail many buyers overlook. If you let TSS lapse, your TallyPrime does not stop working, but the following are unavailable:
- GST return filing and reconciliation updates when the government revises forms or rules.
- e-Invoicing support for businesses that cross the applicable turnover threshold.
- e-Way bill generation from within TallyPrime.
- Online report access and connected banking features.
- Product upgrades to newer TallyPrime versions.
Conclusion
For seasonal businesses, the right choice depends on usage duration and long-term plans. Rental plans suit short, predictable cycles, while a perpetual license becomes more cost-effective over multiple seasons or extended use.
Evaluating operating months, team size and future continuity helps avoid overspending and ensures smooth compliance during peak periods. A well-timed decision also reduces disruptions when GST or e-invoicing rules change.
To simplify this process and implement it seamlessly, businesses can explore TallyPrime or connect with a certified partner to select a plan that aligns with their seasonal needs.
