Udyam Registration

What is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the official online registration process for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India, launched by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) and is now the single, unified way to obtain MSME registration.

The registration is done free of cost on the official Udyam Registration portal, using the enterprise's PAN and Aadhaar. On successful registration, the enterprise receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) and an e-certificate that serves as its MSME identity.

Why is Udyam Registration important?

Udyam Registration is the gateway to MSME benefits in India. Only registered MSMEs can access priority sector lending at concessional rates, protection against delayed payments under the MSMED Act, subsidies under specific schemes, and preferences in government procurement.

Udyam Registration also provides recognised proof of MSME status to lenders, customers, and government agencies. It supports compliance under the MSMED Act, particularly the requirement for larger buyers to make timely payments to MSME suppliers, and the ability of MSMEs to enforce this through the Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council (MSEFC).

How does Udyam Registration work?

1. Verifying eligibility

The enterprise verifies its eligibility as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise based on the prescribed thresholds for investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and annual turnover, under the MSMED Act.

2. Preparing required information

The proprietor, partner, or authorised signatory prepares the required information, including PAN, Aadhaar, GSTIN (where applicable), bank account details, and information on investment and turnover.

3. Registering on the Udyam portal

The applicant accesses the official Udyam Registration portal and submits the details online. The system automatically fetches PAN, GST, and Aadhaar data from linked government databases.

4. Receiving the Udyam Registration Number

On successful submission, the applicant receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) and can download the Udyam Registration certificate.

5. Availing benefits and updating details

The enterprise uses the URN to establish MSME status with lenders, customers, and government agencies, and updates its Udyam Registration whenever there are material changes in investment, turnover, or other particulars.

Example

A small trading business in Kanpur, dealing in industrial spares, meets the MSME criteria based on its investment and turnover. The proprietor decides to register under Udyam to formalise the business's MSME status.

The proprietor visits the official Udyam Registration portal, enters PAN and Aadhaar details, and provides information on investment, turnover, bank account, and GSTIN. The system verifies the details through linked government databases, and generates a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN).

With the URN and Udyam certificate, the business establishes MSME status with its bank (unlocking priority sector lending at concessional rates), with larger customers (enabling protection under the MSMED Act for delayed payments), and with government agencies (participating in schemes and procurement preferences reserved for MSMEs).
